Located in southeastern Ohio is the city of Dayton. It is positioned in Montgomery County and serves as the county seat. Dayton is also the largest city in Montgomery County. In 2016 the United States Census Bureau reported approximately 140,489 people lived in Dayton. Its current population makes Dayton the 6th largest city in Ohio.
Like many Ohio cities, Dayton is located in an area that was originally inhabited by Native American Indians until European-American settlers arrived. Israel Ludlow surveyed and platted Dayton in 1796. By the end of that year, more than 40 log cabins and frame houses were built. Despite experiencing small population growth through the turn of the century, Dayton was designated as the county seat for Montgomery County in 1803. By the 20th century, Dayton was a thriving city and shared in the great economic prosperity of the 1920s. Today, Dayton is one of the most populous cities in Ohio.
